Each entry below is short on purpose. The format is the same every time: age, sensitive period (the window when your child is naturally drawn to that skill), what goes on the tray, where to source the parts in the UK, what the child gets from the work, and the most common pitfall. The first time a Montessori-specific term appears it is glossed in brackets; after that it is used as shorthand.

Trays one to ten are practical-life work, the everyday tasks like pouring, scooping and tidying that build a young child's hand control, concentration and confidence. Trays eleven to twenty are sensorial work, the activities that refine the senses (sight, touch, sound, smell) and lay the groundwork for later maths and language. What are practical-life Montessori trays? (trays 1 to 10)

Practical-life trays give a young child real, useful work scaled to their hands. The ten trays below build pouring, scooping, tweezing, dressing and food-prep skills using kitchen kit and pound-shop bits.

1. Water pouring, jug to jug

  • Age: 18 months to 4 years.
  • Sensitive period: order and movement (the window, roughly 1 to 4, when your child is drawn to repeating small precise actions).
  • On the tray: two small glass jugs, one half-filled with water, a small sponge to mop spills.
  • Source: IKEA POKAL shot-glass-sized tumblers or charity-shop espresso jugs; sponge from any supermarket.
  • What the child gets: wrist control, concentration, and the visible reward of moving water without losing it.
  • Pitfall: giving too much water at first. Start with two tablespoons and build up.

2. Dry pouring, jug to jug

  • Age: 18 months to 3 years.
  • Serves: the same order-and-movement window.
  • On the tray: two small jugs, a quarter-cup of dry rice or split lentils, a small brush and dustpan.
  • Source: Sainsbury's basics rice; brush from a pound shop.
  • What the child gets: an easier first pour than water, plus the satisfying job of sweeping spills.
  • Pitfall: dyed rice is pretty but stains hands and carpet. Plain rice is fine.

3. Spooning, bowl to bowl

  • Serves: order and movement.
  • On the tray: two small bowls, a tablespoon of dried chickpeas or large pasta shells, one teaspoon.

  • What the child gets: the pincer grip and crossing-the-midline arm work that later writing depends on.
  • Pitfall: a too-shallow bowl makes scooping impossible. Use a small ramekin with a lip.

4. Tweezing pom-poms

  • Serves: refinement of movement.

  • On the tray: four or five different sized nuts and bolts, paired and mixed up.

  • What the child gets: twisting, matching, and the feel of metal threads catching. Boys and girls love this equally; ignore the gendered packaging.
  • Pitfall: rusty or sharp-edged hardware. Buy zinc-plated and check the threads.

6. Sponge squeezing, water to water

  • Age: 18 months to 3 years.
  • Serves: order and movement.
  • On the tray: two shallow bowls, one with an inch of water, one empty, a small sponge.
  • Source: kitchen sponge cut in half.
  • What the child gets: hand strength, the calming feedback of squeezing water, and a useful real-life skill (mopping their own spills later).
  • Pitfall: a synthetic sponge that drips everywhere. A natural cellulose one holds water better.

7. Bread buttering

  • Pitfall: sharing the apple immediately. Let the child finish first; the work is the point, not the speed.

9. Buttoning and zipping

  • Serves: care of self, refinement of movement.
  • On the tray: a folded cardigan with three large buttons, or a zipped fleece. No frame needed.
  • Source: the wardrobe, or a charity-shop child's cardigan.
  • What the child gets: the steps of dressing themselves, in a calm sit-down setting rather than at the school-run rush.
  • Pitfall: tiny shirt buttons before the child is ready. Start with one big wooden toggle.

10. Flower arranging in a small vase

  • Age: 3 to 6 years.
  • Serves: care of the environment, beauty.
  • On the tray: a tiny jug of water, a small vase, a pair of blunt-tipped child scissors, three or four cut stems (daisies, dandelions, herbs from the kitchen).
  • Source: the garden, the park verge, a 60p bunch of supermarket alstroemeria.
  • What the child gets: snipping, pouring, choosing, and a small finished thing to put on the kitchen table.
  • Pitfall: glass vases that tip. A small jam jar is sturdier and equally pretty.

What are sensorial Montessori trays? (trays 11 to 20)

Sensorial trays refine one sense at a time (sight, sound, touch, smell) and feed straight into early language and maths. They sit on the same low shelf as the practical-life trays and rotate in and out the same way; the prepared environment guide covers how to lay the shelf out at home.

11. Treasure basket (babies)

  • Age: 6 to 14 months.
  • Serves: the early sensitive periods for sensory exploration and small objects (the window when babies build the senses through handling real things).
  • On the tray: a low wicker basket of ten varied everyday objects, no plastic, no batteries: a wooden spoon, a small whisk, a metal egg-cup, a pinecone, a leather purse, a velvet ribbon, a smooth pebble, a citrus zester, a wooden napkin ring, a soft brush.
  • Source: the kitchen drawer, the garden, charity shops.
  • What the child gets: texture, weight, smell, sound, and the freedom to choose.
  • Pitfall: anything small enough to swallow, anything sharp. Empty-toilet-roll test, every object.

12. Sound matching jars

  • Age: 2.5 to 5 years.
  • Serves: auditory refinement.
  • On the tray: six small opaque pots (two each of three contents: rice, dried beans, a single coin), lids glued shut, on a small tray.
  • Source: mini Branston pickle jars, baby-food pots, or pound-shop spice tins.
  • What the child gets: isolated listening; matching by ear alone.
  • Pitfall: clear jars defeat the lesson because the child sees the answer. Opaque or wrapped in masking tape.

13. Smelling bottles

  • Age: 3 to 6 years.
  • Serves: olfactory refinement.
  • On the tray: four small dark bottles or pill-pots with cotton wool inside, two scented (lavender, mint, lemon, coffee), in matching pairs.
  • Source: an old vitamin pot from the recycling, dried herbs from the spice rack.

15. Colour matching with paint chips

  • Age: 2 to 4 years.
  • Serves: visual discrimination.

  • Source: B&Q or Homebase free paint cards.
  • What the child gets: the same skill the wooden colour tablets (the matched coloured wooden tiles in a Montessori classroom) teach, for free.
  • Pitfall: twenty colours at once. Start with three pairs and add one pair at a time.

16. Sorting by one attribute

  • Age: 2 to 4 years.
  • Serves: classification, early maths thinking.
  • On the tray: a small basket of mixed buttons (or beads, or shells, or pasta shapes), three small dishes, a teaspoon.
  • Source: charity-shop button tin (50p), Hobbycraft beads.
  • What the child gets: the cognitive move of choosing one attribute (colour, size, shape) and grouping by it.
  • Pitfall: too much variety. Start with two clearly different categories, build up.

17. Object-to-picture matching

  • Age: 2 to 4 years.
  • Serves: language, the link between the real thing and its picture.
  • On the tray: five small real objects (a plastic cow, a comb, a pencil, a leaf, a button) and five photographs of those exact objects, printed and laminated.
  • Source: photograph the objects on your phone, print at Boots or Snappy Snaps, laminate at the library if they offer it.
  • What the child gets: the foundation for the nomenclature cards (labelled picture cards used to name and read words) that come later.
  • Pitfall: generic stock photos that do not look like the actual object. Photograph yours.

18. Sandpaper letters substitute, traced in salt

  • Age: 3 to 5 years.
  • Serves: the language window, pre-writing.
  • On the tray: a shallow wooden tray with a thin layer of fine salt or semolina, and a small printed card showing one lower-case letter at a time.
  • Source: any charity-shop wooden tray, Sainsbury's basics salt.
  • What the child gets: the muscle memory of letter shapes, traced with a finger.

19. Cutting strips with scissors

  • Age: 2.5 to 5 years.
  • Serves: refinement of movement, scissor control.
  • On the tray: a small basket of pre-cut paper strips with a thick black line down the middle, child-sized scissors, a small bowl for the offcuts.
  • Source: any A4 paper folded and cut into strips, Wilko child scissors (£1.50).
  • What the child gets: the bilateral hand work that later cutting and writing both depend on.
  • Pitfall: blunt scissors that crumple paper. Buy a proper sharp child pair, not a toddler safety pair, and supervise.

20. Nature tray (rotating)

  • Age: 2 to 7 years.
  • Serves: botany, biology, vocabulary.
  • On the tray: four or five things gathered on the last walk: a conker, an oak leaf, a feather (cleaned), a snail shell, a bit of birch bark. A small magnifying glass alongside.
  • Source: any park, any verge.
  • What the child gets: observation, language ("smooth, ridged, brittle, hollow"), the seasons made tangible.
  • Pitfall: sweeping the lot back into the park bin every Sunday. Keep one or two favourites on a small shelf as a museum.

What does a starter set of DIY Montessori trays look like in a real UK home?

A single mum, two children aged two and five, in a one-bedroom council flat in Glasgow. No garden, no spare cash, no Montessori supplier within a hundred miles. She built her first six trays one Saturday morning for under £8, all of it from a single trip to Wilko and the kitchen drawer. The trays were: a water-pouring tray (two espresso jugs from a charity shop, 80p), a tweezing tray (Hobbycraft pom-poms £2, sugar tongs from the drawer), a sound-matching set (four baby-food pots she had been saving for the recycling), a treasure basket for the two-year-old (a wicker bread basket and ten things from the kitchen), a paint-chip colour-matching tray (free from B&Q on the way home), and a nature tray (a walk to the local park).

She put them on the bottom shelf of the bookcase in the living room. The two-year-old went straight for the treasure basket; the five-year-old chose the tweezing tray and sat with it for forty minutes. By week three she had rotated three of the trays out and added a sponge-squeezing tray, an apple-slicing tray and a button-sorting tray. She has never spent more than £15 in a single month on this and has no plans to start.

If your circumstances are different, a working-from-home parent on a school-hours job, a shift worker, a grandparent doing the bulk of the childcare, the same six trays still work. The trays are not the work; the trays are the container the work happens in.

Frequently asked.

Do I really need a tray for every activity?
No. The tray is a container that signals 'this is one piece of work, with a beginning and an end'. A small tea-tray, a plastic seed-tray, the lid of a shoebox or a square chopping board all do the job. The point is the boundary, not the object.
Where do I actually buy trays in the UK?
IKEA SMULA and KLIPSK trays, Wilko's wooden serving trays, charity shops (Sue Ryder and British Heart Foundation furniture shops are reliable), eBay UK for second-hand wooden cutlery trays, and the pound shop for plastic seed-trays. You do not need a £20 Montessori-branded tray; a £2 charity-shop one is the same object.
How many trays should be out at once?
Six to eight is plenty for a child aged two to five. More than that and the child stops choosing and starts grazing. Rotate one or two trays in and one or two out every week or so, based on what your child is actually using.
My child uses the tray once and then ignores it. Have I done something wrong?
Probably not. Some trays are a one-week interest and some are a six-month obsession. If a tray sits untouched for two weeks, swap it out without ceremony and bring it back in a month. Forced 'work' is not Montessori; the child choosing is the whole point.
What about safety with small parts?
Use the empty-toilet-roll test. If a part fits inside an empty loo roll, it is a choking hazard for a child under three. Tweezing-and-pouring trays with small beans or beads stay on a high shelf for under-threes and only come out with a sitting adult. For tray work involving water, knives or glass, the safety rule is the same as for cooking together: present the activity, watch, do not leave the room.
